The study of literature cannot bring about moral excellence nor prevent moral degeneracy, yet without literature I think that we find it more difficult to live well and act virtuously.

Human life is without flawless events: half lights, wandering shadows, vague hopes, illusions and disillusions, ambitions and submissions, sudden radiance of joy and grief so bitter as to make death seem welcome.  Life imperfections provide literary artists with inspiration to create their verbal artwork that sees spirit, interprets spirit, appeals to spirit, evoke response in spirit.
